Working Student Program
Earn credit towards lessons, farm programs, or food by working with horses or on the farm!
If you are an adult or if you are 12 years or older, we welcome you to improve your farm and horsemanship skills and work towards becoming a Credit Earning Working Student! If in the future you want to own your own homestead or farm, become a riding instructor, or be hired as a full time Farmer at Southlands, becoming a working student is a fun way to surround yourself with like-minded people and progress towards that goal.
As a Credit Earning Working Student, you will work in the barn or on the farm with the animals, plants, and soil or as an educator. You will be paid in ‘credit’ that you can use for any of Southlands Farm’s programs, food, or the advanced workshops we offer.
The 4 steps to becoming a Credit Earning Working Student
Becoming a Working Student
Once you are a Working Student it is a commitment as you will be an ambassador to the farm and responsible for the care of animals. Gaining the experience to be a Working Student can take anywhere between 2 months and many years depending on your time availability. We offer a series of classes - some are core classes required to become a working student, and others are extra-curricular. Each class can be taken independently for interest or you can challenge the whole class series to become a well rounded Farmer or Horseperson.
In order to become a Working Student and earn credit, you need:
